I have to say that I am very glad the first work week of the year was a short one, giving me a gentle start to the new year. I have started a "once-and-for-all" type project, the first part of which I will have finished by Easter, while the second part will take some time longer because it involves more stuff and, as usual, boxes and boxes of paper. But when I get it finished, it will be a big worry off my mind and also off the minds of the whole office. Although I know that it will look worse before it looks better, since part of it involves a Towers of Hanoi type exercise.

The other reason why I am glad that the first week was a short one is that, coming back from two weeks of central heating and double glazing into a flat which, when I got back to it, smelled and felt like bare brickwork and took days to feel like a place to live once more, is that I am being assaulted by a mild but nasty cold. I probably caught it off someone in the plane, and probably would not have felt much of it if I wasn't so cold. But now my nose is plugged, throat is sore, my eyes are gummy and my brain is slightly wooly. It will pass, but I don't enjoy it.
Funnily enough, the heater in the bedroom is, while smaller, far more powerful than the one in the living room. I can heat the bedroom, hallway and bathroom from the bedroom gas heater, while the living room one makes barely a difference to the temperature even with me sitting next to it. If the gas men hadn't cleaned it two months ago, I would think it's broken. Hence, and in order to get rid of my cold, I am going to spend a lot of time packed up on my sofa with a hot water bottle under the duvet, buckets of tea and stacks of books.

Speaking of books and other media, for some reason this guy off the telly has wormed his way into my brain and appeared in my dreams for two out of four nights. It might be because of the cold, who knows, but I found that I'm rather attracted to one James May. So what, I like men with brains who are still connected to the ten-year-old inside them while being able to play the piano and write interesting columns, and it makes me look forward to the next season of Top Gear which should start next week.

Things I learned while listening to The Alan Davies Show live on BBC 5: Rick Wakeman played on David Bowie's Space Odyssey, and in the former USSR state of Georgia, a calf with two heads has been born. You never know when you might need that info.
