I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I really am not keen on this weeks, I didn't think Peter Kay was good enough, and the fact that he started with a fairly posh accent and when you saw him in his true form had a broad Bolton accent, did nothing for me, what the hell was the eczema thing about? Russell seemed to be going more for laughs this week and in my opinion it didn't work. It was a let down after last weeks magnificent episode, frankly I was disappointed and that is the first time I have ever said that about Dr Who
There are many things I would have liked about this, if it hadn't been a Doctor Who episode. Interesting setup, pretty good execution, but... not my taste.
I find that my ability to appreciate less than good Who depends on whether or not I want to handwave the less than good bits. In the case of L&M I don't see why I should bother handwaving when I can hate it with no effort at all... :-|
Aw... I didn't expect you to dislike this episode at all.
But "The Sensorites" or "The Web Planet" are worse than "Timelash". That Colin Baker-serial at least has a plot which feels like it's actually progressing.
What, you thought I'd like this? Like I said somewhere else, if it weren't a Who episode, ok, maybe, but ... sorry. If Eccleston has read this script, I'm not surprised he left after one series.
I actually quite like Timelash; I only quoted this because it's usually unanimously voted the worst episode ever. And I like Colin Baker.
The Web Planet, hm, ok, so the creatures were crappy by today's standards, but I like that episode anyway. Same with the Sensorites, although it goes downhill after the first episode. Both are good concepts, though. And I'll come right out and admit that I love the Menoptera!
Yep, I did. Mainly because of your love for "Farscape". *g*
@Web Planet: Well, after the first part I thought "Hey, this is actually quite good. No idea where its bad reputation comes from" During the second part I got a little bored... and by reaching the end of part three, I already shed tears of despair. Imo, the only good thing about the serial was the ant crashing into the camera. Apart from that it probably has the most annoying sound effect in history of television (the ant-voices) ...and then it even covers almost 70% of the soundtrack. I thought I was going mad!
Erm, sorry. I was just finished this one yesterday evening and the memory (as well as the horror) is still fresh. *lol*
Farscape has never made me cringe in embarrasment the way this episode of Doctor Who has.
@Web Planet, yes, I can see you've only just watched it. *L* Maybe memory makes it better - but I can remember that I liked the mystery and spookiness. And Ian and Barbara, of course.
It was a brilliant episode, and I had a heated exchange with people at Outpost Gallifrey about this. People going beyond criticism. I was rather testy. ;) But really if you didn't enjoy this and see it as a unique look at the Doctor and the effect he has I feel sorry for you, I really do. You cringed with embarrassment? Come ON! What right do you have to be EMBARRASSED? You made the programme? No, so why be embarrassed? And in any case . . . this embarrassed you? Seriously? I loved every second . . . I really did.
It was brave, it was adventurous, it was clever, it was funny, it was horrible - the monster was detestable, and a 10-year-old kid came up with that idea! The little bastard! Fantastic!
LInDA made me laugh. They made me like them, they were quickly-drawn yet utterly believable. Little things, like 'did you just kiss her on the cheek?' and the obviously budding, coy romance . . . the 'pizza, as mates' bit was lovely. The loneliness, yet acceptance of Jackie and her defense of not only her daughter but the Doctor, too.
The way the Doctor flits in and out of lives but we have never before seen the EFFECT he leaves behind like we have in RTD's era. This episode was charming, it was so much packed into 45 minutes. Timelash. Timelash! Time Lash pales next to this. ANY 6th Doctor story pales next to this. The 6th Doctor era was SHIT, pure and simple. THAT'S cringeworthy stuff.
Love and Monsters? Utterly brilliant TV . . and you know what?
Utterly brilliant Who.
I still love anyone like Tys and Puma who obviously won't agree with this post . . . but after the 'fan' reaction I saw this weekend on some forums, this post was bursting to get out of me.
What can I say? Fair enough - let's agree to disagree. :)
Like I said, there are a lot of things I could like about this, the teaser is brilliant, and it's a fair thing up until twenty minutes into the programme where I started asking myself when the episode would start. Maybe it's me being a humourless German, but although I know this was meant to be a "funny" episode, I couldn't laugh.
Maybe I'm taking this too seriously, but... ah well. I'm glad somebody liked it, anyway! :)
I think you are, I really do. And it was much more than a 'funny' episode. But hey, lots of fans agree with you, but I will say that Who was the top-rated programme that day in the UK. ;)
oh, and the ausidence steadily increased by over a million during transmission. Doesn't make your opinion invalid . . . let's jsut say it wasn't one for the traditionalists *l*
*L* No, that it definitely wasn't! What's strange about this is that with this post, YOU have defined ME as a traditionalist. What's weird about this picture? ;)
I liked it enough to watch it twice so far, but I just found it a bit of a disappointment after last weeks episode, hardly surprising though as last weeks was truly excellent! I don't know! Agree with you about the 6th Doctor era though, I've seen a few of them and they weren't all that good at all!
I started out liking it a lot, Elton was a good character who spoke to the lonely nerd in me (I'm not ashamed to say I own ELO's greatest hits...) but I think it could have ended better, and with deeper emotion, without the paving slab ending(though I'd love to know how the hints at BJs went down in the houses with kiddy watchers...
One thing I do hate is children's TV trying to hijack it into a fully children's show. Bloody annoying.
I love ELO, myself, and I liked Elton as a character, too. But the paving slab? That goes beyond comedy and into tastelessness, I think.
On the whole, it was OK until the monster got revealed, where it went to tv hell in a rubber suit. And while I do think it's a neat idea to have some audience participation, and that kd will treasure this forever, don't they have enough children's spinoffs already, what with Project: Who? This show, at it's best, appeals to all ages. Even to the over-30s.

Date: 2006-06-19 07:46 pm (UTC)Timelash really wasn't that bad; at least it had the Doctor in it all the way, and a good Doctor he was, too.
This? No, thanks.
