Thoughts upon seeing Age of Steel

This is the first time the new series has felt like Doctor Who to me, as opposed to A Science Fiction Series With Time Travel. Either I'm used to it now, or it's really starting to be Doctor Who.
Love those sound effects.
Hate the Parallel World wildcard. But at least Rose has a good memory.
Loved Pete Tyler's reaction to the revelation.
Like Rose less and less. Wish they'd kept Mickey instead.
Loved the scenes that were already RP'd. What coincidences!
They're playing the Emo card too often for my liking.
And it's bloody Earth again next week! Where'd the "S" in TARDIS go? Is it "TARDIE" now, as in "E" for Earth?

Date: 2006-05-22 10:53 pm (UTC)I cannot agree the 'emo-card' (emotion card? What a horrible term . . .) is being over played. I thought the scene with Sally Phelan, added to Cyber-Jackie, added to the Cyberman's reaction to seeing itself in the mirror, brought home the full horror of being turned into one of those . . . things. Never before have I watched the Cybermen and felt a crawling, creeping horror . . . the nervous system integrated with the suit was a particularly gruesome touch. Finally I *got* what the Cyberman are. And it has disturbed me, it really has.
Rose? Not at all keen on her this season. She's fared very badly relative to Sarah and Mickey. Mickey . . . his evolution is complete. In true departing-companion style, he stayed behind to fight the good fight. The scene where he beckoned the Cyberman on to 'come and have a go!' was priceless! Go Mickey!
I loved Mrs Moore and shouted out when she was killed. Very upsetting. Tennent was spot-on as the Doctor. He is really settling into the role - I stand by my earlier view that he could be one of the greats. Troughton/T.Baker with a dash of McGann. Good stuff! By the way, the scenes of Mrs Moore and the Doctor in the tunnels with the deactivated Cybes was VERY creepy . . . brilliant.
Loved the Zeppelins, loved Battersea power station, loved this two-parter dearly and it comfortably sits among my favourite ever Who stories. I made the mistake of venturing onto the Outpost Gallifrey forums to see the usual collection of joyless bastards, nitpickers and generally sad wankers rip it to bits. Well fuck off the lot of you. This was a triumph. Bloody brilliant stuff. and anyone who disagrees is welcome to meet me by the bikesheds for a good old ruck - but I'll win. I've been upgraded!
The future is bright
The future is Who!

Date: 2006-05-23 07:33 am (UTC)Sorry, I should have specified - I can't stand Rose being so emotional all the time. As someone somewhere said, we've gone from the screaming, ankle-breaking blonde companion to an overly-emotional egoistical blonde companion.
The emotional scenes with the Cybermen, now those were brilliant. Chilling, but brilliant.
As for the OG wankers, here's a rebuttal by Steven Moffat, also off the OG forum:
"What are you TALKING ABOUT you mad, mewling fool??
If that episode had shown up in the 80s (or the 70s, or the 60s) we'd all have fainted of joy on the spot! Whump! All of us! Every fan in the country - gurgle, whump, living room floor. Medical experts would've been flown in from all around the world! "My God," they'd have cried, "every geek in Britain is unconscious!! Quick, let's pull their pants over their heads and draw moustaches on them!"
The Elder Statesmen of Fandom, in their vast and mighty Council Chamber (in Mum's bedroom), would
actually have EXPLODED!! Into CLOUDS OF VAPOUR!!! Every breath taken in the whole wide world wide would have contained a measurable quantity of IAN LEVINE!!
And here you are, you lot, and you don't even know you're born. Some of us had to go to school the Monday after the Giant Rat!! No, REALLY! Think about that! Added ten years to my virginity, that did, Giant Rat Monday! Oh, I haven't forgotten!
Kids today!
Sheesh!"
