Ah, you mean that only under the influence of a recreational drug can those plot holes be overlooked? ;-)
I didn't say I did not enjoy the thing, quite the contrary (you should have seen me!), but still, feeder fish?
Also, you know McCoy is among my favourite Doctors.

Yeah, pilot fish, sorry. Still, they serve no real purpose, and why were they dressed as Santas? How long have they been observing Earth, then?

The energy the Doctor was exuding (regeneration energy, possibly combined with the last of the vortex energy leaving him?) attracted the Sycorax to Earth. But the pilot fish parasiting of the Sycorax were also drawn to the energy. They reached the Earth just ahead of the Sycorax ship and used a disguise when they arrived, locking on to the prevailing cultural event of the time - Christmas. The TARDIS has a chameleon circuit - the pilot fish must operate along similar lines, the better to reach their target relatively undetected.

Uh huh... and the pilot fish just happen to have the same transporter beam technology as the Sycorax. Also, I wish I knew what they looked like under their metal masks. Come to think of it, one of them was ... killed, for want of a non-spoilery word, was he left there? To be found by UNIT?

Possibly the poilot fish aren't parasitical . . but symbiotic, and share some things with the Sycorax. Come on, this is sci-fi!
