tysolna: (walking past with a smile)
Has it really been that long since I last posted here? (Answer: Yes it has.) If only I had a direct upload from my brain into LJ, things would look much different. I compose an entry daily on my way home from work, only to find myself sitting in front of the computer and being distraced by so many things that I don't get around to actually writing the post. And of course, with time, it becomes more and more difficult, since there are more and more things I want to tell...

... so, what better way to get back into LJ-Land than with a meme! :D

If you want to play then leave a comment and I'll give you 10 actors and 10 actresses (or 5 and 5, if you prefer) and in your own journal, post the movies you enjoy most with those actors. No pressure, do it if you want to and don't if you don't.

This list was given to me by [livejournal.com profile] idahoswede. And I reminded myself of some movies I need to rewatch with the help of youtube.

Actors:

1. Max von Sydow. To be quite shockingly honest, I know him best from an assortment of Science Fiction movies - Dune, Dreamscape, The Ice Pirates (oh dear me yes), and of course Flash Gordon and the James Bond appearances. He makes a good villain, and villains are usually more interesting than heroes. But if you ask for the movie I enjoyed most that he was in, it would be "Until the End of the World", by Wim Wenders. Although I saw that only once, in a cinema around 1991, the fact that I can even remember what I had to drink shows that it made quite an impression on me.

2. Humphrey Bogart. Oh my. Sabrina, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep. But the favourite, hands down, is African Queen.

3. Peter Fonda. I remember him as the cute guy in "Easy Rider", but then doesn't everyone? :)

4. Denzel Washington. Oh he is one of the good ones. Reminds me I need to watch "The Book of Eli". Favourite movie so far, "Malcolm X", again one that made a huge impression on me.

5. Kenneth Branagh. I quite like his Shakespeare adaptions, although I think his "Hamlet" is a bit pretentious for my taste. "Wild Wild West" shows his funny side. But the one I like him best in is "Peter's Friends".

6. David Suchet. Ok, I draw a blank. Sorry. I know he plays Poirot, but that's about it.

7. Johnny Depp. Unlike #6, there are too many to choose from, especially since he's so versatile (and weird, and, yes, yummy). I think I'd have to narrow it down to "Chocolat", the "Pirates of the Carribean"-movies, and "L.A. without a map" (as himself).

8. Peter Lorre. Easy. "M".

9. Vincent Price. He has one of those voices I could listen to all day, even if he read the phone book. In my mind, he is entwined with Edgar Allan Poe. He taught me horror as Doctor Phibes, but my favourite movie he stars in is "Theatre of Blood".

10. Tom Cruise. A ubiquitous actor I could honestly do without. On the other hand, "Rain Man" wouldn't be the same without him, and neither would "Born on the Fourth of July".

Actresses:

1. Julia Roberts. "Flatliners". Because I enjoy the movie. And "Pretty Woman", just because.

2. Glenn Close. I like her a lot, but my favourite movie with her in it has to be "Meeting Venus".

3. Joanne Woodward. I know I know her, and I know I know her as more than Paul Newman's wife, but where from escapes me.

4. Julie Walters. "Educating Rita". And everything else she's in.

5. Marilyn Monroe. Statuesque. Movie? "Some like it hot".

6. Doris Day. Her movies featured a lot when I was growing up, movies like "Pillow Talk", but the one I'd chose is "The Man Who Knew Too Much".

7. Hayley Mills. "The Parent Trap", a 1960's version of Erick Kästner's "Das Doppelte Lottchen", which was actually shown on German TV when I grew up and was my introduction to the theme of identical twins separated in early childhood.

8. Debra Winger. "Shadowlands". Debra as Joy Gresham, Anthony Hopkins as Jack "C.S." Lewis, how can you go wrong?

9. Drew Barrymore. "E.T.", and "Donnie Darko". It's fascinating to see a child star grow up. Oh, and "Donnie Darko"? I don't pretend to fully understand it.

10. Ava Gardner. A stunningly beautiful woman, and a lovely voice. Fish's gotta swim, bird's gotta fly... But my favourite movie would be "The Snows of Kilimanjaro".

And there you have it. Now if I can only write this much about what's happening in my life... :D
