We're gonna have a good time
May. 11th, 2009 01:35 pmI like weekends in BiSto, especially when the weather is continually brilliant.
On Saturday, my birthday (39, omg), I went out in search of pampering and clothes. I don't know what's wrong with female fashions at the moment, but I don't fancy sleeveless tops that have a bulky skirt-like thing attached which make your hips look enormous - you can just about carry that off when you're thin, but I have seen girls wear this style who IMHO shouldn't, and since I am a member of said group, I wouldn't wear it. I don't want to look like a hippopotamus. And although I did see a few things I liked, they either didn't fit me (why oh why do designers put frilly stuff and bows all over blouses, it's impractical and ruins a good fabric and cut), or they were way out of my price range (such as Monsoon).
Nevertheless, I found a shirt - a white cotton one with blue and red outlined flowers and grasses, sort of semi-Hawaiian - in the men's department of Next. If the shirt fits, wear it.
The local library has a reward system which I will use mercilessly. Every time you borrow something, you get a stamp. Collect four, and you can borrow a CD or DVD for free. Four stamps? Like, no problem!
Walking on, I took a stroll through the park, and through the funfair which is on for a week here. I did my usual funfair thing, which is have a go at the shooting range, and "shot" a blue teddy bear which now sits on the windowsill in my living room. I watched the youth of BiSto scream and laugh their way through the merry-go-rounds (such a harmless word for such sickness-inducing machines).
I had originally planned to go for lunch somewhere, but couldn't decide on where, so I went to the shops and bought myself a birthday dinner of garlic butter stuffed potatos, fresh green beans, and a steak, plus some strawberries and blueberries, humous and taramasalata, and the obligatory Battenberg for afters. Gods, how I feasted. Oh, yes, and a nice bottle of white, too. The leftovers were consumed yesterday, I had no inclination to cook, instead reading my way through a book called "Your inner fish", which is all about fossils, fish, and the evolutionary history of humans, before taking a long, luxurious bath.
I had a few lovely telephone calls and text messages and internet communications from friends and family with birthday wishes. I had a long walk, a visit to the library, a good read in the sunshine, and a rather good dinner, if I do say so myself. Sounds like a good birthday to me.
