Medicine Man
Feb. 5th, 2009 12:24 pmThe trouble with relying entirely on natural sleeping rhythms is that I seem to want to sleep eight hours a night, and if I stay up until 4 in the morning reading, I will sleep until noon. But the weather's not likely to tempt me outside today anyway, except to get some milk and return my library books.
Yesterday, I went to visit the Wellcome Collection, something I'd wanted to do ever since I first heard about it some time ago. I didn't know how I would react to something completely based on medicine - not a subject I'm well versed in - but this was utterly fascinating. I was most impressed by a couple of exhibits, such as the huge bookcase containing ginormous books with the human genome, Darwin's cane, or the Guillotine blade. Many weird and wonderful things there.
Then I went downstairs to the "War & Medicine" exhibition, which I walked through with mixed feelings of sadness, horror and the pevading question "Why?" It's appaling to see how inventive people are when it comes to hurting others.
Strangely enough, I also learned a small detail about my own country: I always thought that Scho-Ka-Kola was a product of the 1970s. Turns out it's about 40 years older than that.
